Muslim woman wins Wal-Mart’s State Teacher of the Year award

Cypress Falls High School teacher receives Wal-Mart’s State Teacher of the Year award and $10,000 educational grant for her school

Sept. 11, 2006 – Kausam Salam, an English teacher at Cypress Falls High School, was selected as one of the top educators in the nation in Wal-Mart’s 11th annual Teacher of the Year program. She was honored as Texas Teacher of the Year in a ceremony held in the school’s library on Monday, Sept. 11.

“Mrs. Kausam Salam is the epitome of professional education inasmuch as she is dedicated, caring and knowledgeable in her love of teaching children,” said Dr. Robert Worthy, principal at CFHS. “The education profession, in general, and Cypress Falls High School in particular, are very fortunate and blessed to have Mrs. Salam teaching our students. She is very deserving of this prestigious award and will serve Texas and Wal-Mart well as teacher of the year. We are all very, very proud of her accomplishments and success as a classroom teacher.”

Salam, who has taught for 15 years, was chosen from among teachers throughout the state by Phi Delta Kappa International education association for contributions to education and the positive impact made on students.

“This award recognizes teachers who move beyond books and basic curriculum to instill a passion for learning in all of their students,” said Grein, the local Wal-Mart Supercenter store manager who presented Salam with a $10,000 educational grant from Wal-Mart to the school. “We are extremely proud that this great honor has been awarded to one of our own teachers at Cypress Falls High School.”

Salam was first selected as Wal-Mart’s local Teacher of the Year winner after being nominated by one of her students back in February at the Wal-Mart located on the corner of Eldridge and FM 1960. The local store announced its winner last May and awarded Salam with a $1,000 educational grant for her school making her eligible for the State Teacher of the Year award.

“This award is a reflection of all educators like Kausam Salam who are dedicated to their students and their profession,” Grein said.
