Muslim woman scientist takes top prize in contest promoting science-and-religion research
Salam/Peace:
Shiva Khalili, Ph.D., an Iranian scholar and clinical therapist at the Iranian Center for Epilepsy in Tehran, took the $2,000 top prize in the first-ever Science & Theology News contest launched to explore the work of scholars at the nexus of science, medicine and theology and to bring their findings to the attention of a wider audience. In a 470-page doctoral dissertation written in German for Austria’s prestigious University of Vienna, Khalili, 37, posits the idea the religious beliefs are part of a person’s psychological makeup and develops a new psychological theory that embraces spirituality along with the naturalistic world view long held by modern science. A practicing Muslim who lives in Tehran, Khalili says that adopting such “a holistic world view” is necessary to avoid reductionism and more fully explain human behavior and experience.
